Mike - this might have been near you...
Freshman Mackenzie Maier scored 17 of her 24 career-high points in the second half to lead the High Point University women's basketball team past Charleston Southern, 72-57 on Tuesday night in Big South action.

Maier also pulled down a team high nine rebounds, dished out three assists and recorded three blocked shots for the Panthers (13-14, 5-6 BSC). Jurica Hargraves added 12 points.

She plays at High Point University? That's near where we live in Gastonia, about 3 hours away. How is she related?

Frank, She is your mom's cousin's daughter, so she would be your mom's second cousin, and I guess your third? Not really sure how it works after that. Her father is John Maier, and his father was your mom's Uncle John, Grandpa Maier's older brother. Got all that?? AD

If you want to know about cousins, ask a southerner. If she is Frank's mom's cousin's daughter, she is Frank's second cousin. The children of first cousins are second cousins to each other.
The child of your first cousin, is your first cousin, once removed. She would be Dorothy's first cousin, once removed.

You go Kat! I always wondered what that "once removed" meant.

You are never too old to learn, never could figure out that cousin thing. Anyway, she is related to us and we are proud of her. Hope to see all cousins in September at Maier/McGinn reunion.

Wow, well thanks for sorting that out, my head hurts. Almost sorry I asked!
